Ever found yourself in a dilemma while choosing a piano? This is one of the questions one has to ask themselves before purchasing a piano.

Well, besides the underlying factors such as space and affordability, differences can be noted.

Grand pianos have:

  • Richer and varying sonority with wide dynamics from soft to loud.
  • Smoother sustain.
  • More substantial tone.
  • Higher ability to add subtle expression of notes.
  • Sound is uniform and well balanced.
  • Higher ability of note repetitions thus much easier to play.
  • High built quality since they take up time to assemble.
  • Has more aesthetic appeal.

In upright pianos on the other hand, have the following advantages:

  • Upright pianos take up less space since they are compactly designed.
  • They are also a very great alternative to digital keyboards.
  • Upright pianos also cost significantly less.
  • They give a softer and less dramatic sound in a smaller home setting, hence more soothing.

In conclusion, having a grand or upright piano has its advantages depending on different needs and purposes. However a grand piano has got higher built up abilities as compared to an upright.
